Gustav’s Machatý film “Ecstasy” was the first film that shot a woman having an orgasm. The film is about a woman that is married to a much older man, obsessed with order and having no room for passion in his life. While leaving him she meets another, a younger man and they fall in love. Although the “sex scene” is much softer than what we are used to nowadays, the film was criticised during its time as indecent, morally dangerous, immoral, audacious etc. In fact, the leading actress, 18 year old Hedy Kiesler had to change her name to Hedy Lamarr so that she could continue her career. But she was a little doomed after all for this brave step. Others, though, admired it’s beauty and romance, with a sensual vibe, of course. The only fact that we can’t acknowledge today is that Machatýs was ahead of his time.
